Problem

Two students perform an experiment to compare the performance of two battery-operated winches, X and Y. Winch X lifts a 30 kg30\,\text{kg} carton through 4 m4\,\text{m} in 15 s15\,\text{s}, while Winch Y lifts a 24 kg24\,\text{kg} carton through 5 m5\,\text{m} in 12 s12\,\text{s}, all at uniform speed. (i) For each winch, calculate the work done in lifting its respective carton. (ii) For each winch, calculate the power output during the lift. (iii) Using your answers, state which winch is more powerful and by what factor. (iv) If both winches are required to raise their cartons together to the same height of 8 m8\,\text{m}, estimate the time each one would take, assuming their power output remains the same as calculated above.
