Problem
A workshop uses a hydraulic press that has two vertical cylinders connected at the base and filled with oil. The smaller (input) piston has an area of 20cm2 while the larger (output) piston has an area of 500cm2. A metallic job requiring a downward force of 1.5×104N is placed on the larger piston.
(i) Calculate the minimum force that must be exerted on the smaller piston to start raising the job.
(ii) If the operator pushes the smaller piston down by 8cm, determine the rise of the larger piston.
(iii) Compute the work done by the operator on the input piston and the work done on the job by the output piston for the displacement in part (ii). Comment on the result.
