Problem

Two blocks, A and B, have masses m1m_{1} and m2m_{2} respectively. They are to be raised so that both acquire the same gravitational potential energy relative to a common ground level. Answer the following: (a) Derive an expression for the height h2h_{2} to which block B of mass m2m_{2} must be raised if block A of mass m1m_{1} is raised to a height h1h_{1} and both blocks are to possess equal potential energy. (b) Using your result from part (a), determine the numerical value of h2h_{2} when m1=4 kgm_{1}=4\,\text{kg}, h1=5 mh_{1}=5\,\text{m}, and m2=6 kgm_{2}=6\,\text{kg} on a planet where g′=15 m s−2g'=15\,\text{m\,s}^{-2}. (c) Suppose block B is first raised to the height found in part (b) and is then slowly lowered to height 2.0 m2.0\,\text{m} above the ground. Calculate the change in its mechanical energy during this lowering process.
