Problem

Two friends A and B start together from the same bus stop and move along the same straight road. • Friend A walks with a constant speed of 2 m s−12\,\text{m\,s}^{-1} for 20 s20\,\text{s}. • Friend B waits at the bus stop for 5 s5\,\text{s} and then walks uniformly, reaching a point 40 m40\,\text{m} away from the bus stop at t=20 st=20\,\text{s}. Answer the following with reference to their motion. (i) Draw separate position–time graphs for A and B on the same set of axes. (ii) From the graphs determine the speed of B during his walking interval. (iii) Using the graphs or otherwise, find the time at which both friends are at the same position and state that position. (iv) Who covers the greater distance in the first 20 s20\,\text{s}? Support your answer with calculations based on the slopes of the graphs.
