Problem

A block of mass 4 kg4\,\text{kg} is placed on a rough horizontal surface. A 20 N20\,\text{N} force is applied at an angle of 30∘30^{\circ} above the horizontal, pulling the block. The coefficients of friction are μs=0.50\mu_s = 0.50 and μk=0.40\mu_k = 0.40. Take g=9.8 m s−2g = 9.8\,\text{m\,s}^{-2}. Work out the following. (i) Determine the normal reaction acting on the block while the 20 N20\,\text{N} force is applied. (ii) Establish whether the block remains stationary or moves. Give suitable calculations. (iii) If motion takes place, calculate the frictional force acting on the block. (iv) Hence find the acceleration of the block when it is in motion.
