Problem
In a physics laboratory a student wishes to obtain a magnetic field of 4.0 mT inside a solenoid that can carry a maximum current of 5.0 A. The solenoid is to have 1 000 turns wound closely together.
(a) Calculate the minimum length over which the 1 000 turns must be wound so that the required field is produced without exceeding the current limit.
(b) The student later stretches the solenoid so that its length is doubled while the current remains 5.0 A and the number of turns is unchanged. Calculate the new magnetic field inside the stretched solenoid.
