Problem

A large, open reservoir supplies water to a thin vertical nozzle located a short distance below the water surface. Once the water exits the nozzle, it forms a free jet that rises upward into the air before falling back down. Assume the water in the tank and the jet can be treated as an ideal, incompressible fluid. Atmospheric pressure acts on both the exposed water surface and on the jet at every point after it leaves the nozzle. (a) Identify the forms of mechanical energy that a small parcel of water possesses while it travels from the free surface inside the tank, through the nozzle, and finally to the highest point of the jet. (b) Explain, without performing any calculations, why the jet cannot rise to a vertical height greater than the distance between the water surface inside the tank and the nozzle opening if no external pump is used. (c) Qualitatively describe how air resistance acting on the jet would alter the maximum height reached. Support your answer with energy-based reasoning.
