Problem

A spring balance is calibrated in kilogram-force (kgf) under standard gravity g=9.80 m s−2g = 9.80\,\text{m\,s}^{-2}. When an unknown object is suspended from it at a hill station where g=9.75 m s−2g = 9.75\,\text{m\,s}^{-2}, the pointer shows a reading of 5.0 kgf5.0\,\text{kgf}. Answer the following: (a) Convert the reading of 5.0 kgf5.0\,\text{kgf} into newton. (b) Determine the true mass of the object in kilogram. (c) What apparent mass would the balance indicate for the same object at a place where g=9.90 m s−2g = 9.90\,\text{m\,s}^{-2}?
