Problem

Two identical balls, each of mass 0.20 kg0.20\,\text{kg}, are thrown with a speed of 5 m/s5\,\text{m/s}—one towards the east and the other towards the west along the same horizontal line. (i) Calculate the momentum of each ball, clearly indicating its direction. (ii) Determine the net momentum of the system formed by the two balls and explain your reasoning without using any equations beyond the calculation in part (i). (iii) Using this example, explain why velocity is classified as a vector quantity while mass is not.
