Problem

A small wooden prism floats in water such that one-third of its height remains above the water surface. (i) Explain qualitatively why only a part of the prism remains above water when it is floating. (ii) Without substituting numerical values, derive an expression relating the density of the wood to the density of water from the given observation. (iii) The same prism is now floated in another liquid and only one-quarter of its height is above the liquid surface. Using the expression obtained in part (ii), compare the density of this liquid with that of water.
