Problem

Three solid metal blocks P, Q and R have identical volumes of 1.0×10−3 m31.0\times10^{-3}\,\text{m}^{3} but different masses of 0.90 kg0.90\,\text{kg}, 0.75 kg0.75\,\text{kg} and 1.20 kg1.20\,\text{kg} respectively. Each block is gently lowered into a large tank of oil of density 900 kg m−3900\,\text{kg\,m}^{-3}. (i) Calculate the density of each block. (ii) Arrange the blocks in the order of the extent to which they will sink in the oil, starting with the block that sinks least. (iii) For every block that floats, find the volume of the block that remains submerged in the oil.
