Problem

An automobile starts from rest at point S, moves along a straight line and executes the following three stages in succession: Stage I: Accelerates uniformly at 2 m s⁻² for 5.0 s. Stage II: Continues with the speed gained in Stage I for the next 10 s. Stage III: Decelerates uniformly to rest in 5.0 s. Taking the initial position of the car as the origin, answer the following. (i) Calculate the distance covered in each of the three stages. (ii) Determine the total distance travelled and the total time taken. (iii) Compute the average speed for the entire motion. (iv) Find the displacement of the car from point S at the instant it comes to rest and hence obtain the average velocity for the whole journey. (v) Compare the numerical values obtained in (iii) and (iv) and state which one is larger, giving a reason for the difference.
