Problem

A 1.0 kg1.0\,\text{kg} wooden block is placed on a horizontal rough table and different loads are added on its top. For each load the least horizontal pull FF required to start the motion is measured with a spring balance. The observations are: (a) Load added on block (kg): 0, 1, 2, 3 (b) Corresponding pull FF (N): 3.0, 5.9, 8.8, 11.9 (c) (i) Calculate the normal reaction NN for each observation. (d) (ii) Plot a graph of FF (vertical axis) against NN (horizontal axis) on a sheet of graph paper and draw the best-fit straight line. (e) (iii) From the slope of the straight line, determine the coefficient of static friction between the table and the block. (f) (iv) Using the value obtained, estimate the horizontal pull needed to just move the block when an additional 5 kg5\,\text{kg} is placed on it.
