Problem
A 50.0 g sample of substance X is heated from −10 °C to 110 °C. The temperature rises steadily from −10 °C to 0 °C, remains constant at 0 °C while the sample melts, then rises steadily from 0 °C to 100 °C, remains constant at 100 °C while the sample boils, and finally rises to 110 °C. Explain why the temperature does not change during the two constant-temperature intervals even though heat is continuously supplied.
