Problem
A rectangular air-filled parallel-plate capacitor has plate area A=0.020m2 and plate separation d=1.0mm. It is connected to an ideal 9.0 V battery until fully charged.
(a) Determine the capacitance of the capacitor.
(b) Calculate the magnitude of the charge residing on each plate after it is fully charged.
(c) Compute the energy stored in the capacitor at this moment.
(d) Without disconnecting the battery, the air between the plates is entirely replaced by glycerin whose dielectric constant is κ=42. Determine the new energy stored in the capacitor and state the factor by which the energy has changed compared with the value found in part (c).
