Problem

A sealed, rigid 1.0 L cylinder initially contains 1.0 mol of CH4(g)\text{CH}_{4}(g) at 25 °C. Three separate modifications are proposed: I. The gas is heated to 200 °C while the volume remains 1.0 L. II. The gas is allowed to expand isothermally at 25 °C to 2.0 L. III. Half of the gas is removed from the cylinder at 25 °C, leaving the volume unchanged. Place the final states I–III in order of increasing entropy of the methane sample (1 = lowest, 3 = highest). Provide one sentence identifying the primary factor that supports your ranking.
