Problem

A car is travelling at 40 m s−140\,\text{m\,s}^{-1}. The driver first applies the brakes lightly so that the car experiences a uniform retardation of 3 m s−23\,\text{m\,s}^{-2} for 5 s5\,\text{s}. Immediately afterwards, the brakes are pressed harder and the retardation becomes 6 m s−26\,\text{m\,s}^{-2} until the car stops. Calculate the total distance covered from the instant the brakes were first applied till the car comes to rest.
