Problem

A house painter presses a paint roller against a flat wall. The painter applies a force of 35 N along a line that makes an angle of 45° with the normal to the wall. The cylindrical roller is 25 cm long and makes contact with the wall along a strip 2.0 mm wide. (a) Determine the component of the 35 N force that is perpendicular to the wall. (b) Compute the contact area between the roller and the wall in square metres. (c) Using your results, calculate the pressure exerted by the roller on the wall.
