Problem

A circular ice puck AA of mass mm slides over friction-less ice with speed 6.0 m s−16.0\,\text{m\,s}^{-1} towards the east. A second puck BB of mass m2\tfrac{m}{2} is at rest when it is struck by AA. The line joining their centres at the instant of impact is 45∘45^{\circ} north of east. The coefficient of restitution for the collision is e=0.80e = 0.80. (a) Resolve the initial momentum of the system into components parallel and perpendicular to the line of centres and hence find the magnitudes of the corresponding components just after impact. (b) Obtain the speed and the direction (bearing measured from the east) of each puck immediately after the collision. (c) Calculate the angle between the directions of motion of the two pucks after impact. (d) Determine the percentage loss in the total kinetic energy due to the collision.
