Problem

At a particular instant a proton is located at the origin and moves with speed 3.0×106 m/s3.0\times10^{6}\,\text{m/s} in the +z direction. Two observation points are defined relative to the proton’s instantaneous position: • Point Q₁ at (0.020 m, 0, 0) • Point Q₂ at (–0.020 m, 0, 0) (1) Determine the direction of the magnetic field at Point Q₁ produced by the moving proton. State your answer using the coordinate directions (+x, –x, +y, –y, +z, –z). (2) Determine the direction of the magnetic field at Point Q₂ produced by the moving proton and explain any similarities or differences relative to your answer for Q₁. (3) Compare the magnitudes of the magnetic fields at Q₁ and Q₂. Are they equal, or is one greater than the other? Justify your reasoning without performing a numeric calculation. (4) If the proton’s speed were doubled while its path and the observation points remained the same, state and justify qualitatively how the magnetic-field magnitude at Q₁ would change.
