Problem

In a hydrogen discharge tube, electrons are excited to the n=4n=4 level. They subsequently relax to lower levels in all possible ways. (a) List all possible downward transitions that can occur starting from n=4n=4, and calculate the energy (in eV) of the photon emitted in each transition. (b) For every photon listed in part (a), determine its wavelength and classify it as ultraviolet, visible or infrared. (c) How many of the emitted photons belong to the Balmer series? Give the wavelengths of these Balmer lines.
