Problem

A car’s velocity–time graph can be described as follows: it slows down uniformly from 20 m/s20\,\text{m/s} to 10 m/s10\,\text{m/s} in the first 5 s5\,\text{s}, then continues at 10 m/s10\,\text{m/s} for the next 4 s4\,\text{s}, and finally speeds up uniformly to 16 m/s16\,\text{m/s} in the last 3 s3\,\text{s}. (i) Calculate the acceleration during the first 5 s5\,\text{s}. (ii) Determine the total displacement during the entire 12 s12\,\text{s}. (iii) Find the average velocity for the whole journey.
