Problem

An athletics track is formed by attaching two semicircles each of radius 21 m to the opposite ends of a straight rectangular section that is 120 m long. Respond to the following parts: (a) Show that the total length of one lap of the track is 2×120 m+2π×21 m2\times120\,\text{m}+2\pi\times21\,\text{m}. (b) Compute the numerical value of the length of one lap, taking π=22/7\pi = 22/7. (c) Find the area enclosed by the track, correct to the nearest square metre. (d) The track has 3 parallel lanes of uniform width 1 m laid inside the outer boundary. Determine the combined area of the 3 lanes, correct to the nearest square metre.
