Problem

A flywheel in an engineering laboratory is rotating at 150 rad s−1150\,\text{rad\,s}^{-1}. For safety reasons it must be brought to rest without allowing it to turn through more than 120120 full revolutions once the brake is applied. The flywheel has a rim of radius 0.40 m0.40\,\text{m}. The brake exerts a constant retarding torque so that the angular deceleration remains uniform. (i) Calculate the minimum magnitude of the angular deceleration that will satisfy the safety requirement. (ii) Determine the time required for the flywheel to come to rest under this deceleration. (iii) Find the magnitude of the tangential deceleration of a point on the rim just before the wheel stops.
