Two students stand on the flat roof of their school building 50m above the ground. At the same instant, Student A simply drops a small stone from rest, while Student B throws an identical stone straight upward with a speed of 10m/s. Air resistance is negligible and g=10m/s2.
(i) Calculate the maximum height reached by B’s stone above the roof level.
(ii) Find the speed of B’s stone when it returns to the level of the roof on its way down.
(iii) When B’s stone descends past the roof level, A’s stone is still falling. Determine the speed of each stone at that instant and hence state how much faster one stone is than the other.
(iv) Which stone will reach the ground first? Give a reason for your answer without calculating the actual times of fall.
