Problem

The oxidation of nitric oxide by oxygen proceeds by the overall stoichiometry 2 NO(g) + O₂(g) → 2 NO₂(g). Kinetic studies show the rate is first order in NO and first order in O₂. The experiment is run twice using identical initial concentrations but at two different temperatures. The data are summarized below. [NO]₀ = 0.050 M  [O₂]₀ = 0.020 M
Temperature (K)Initial rate (mol·L⁻¹·s⁻¹)
2987.5 × 10⁻⁴
3201.6 × 10⁻³
(a) Using the 298 K data, calculate the numerical value and units of k. (b) Repeat the calculation for the 320 K data. (c) Determine the ratio k₃₂₀⁄k₂₉₈ and interpret what this value implies about the temperature sensitivity of the reaction rate. (d) Based on the magnitude of the ratio you obtained, predict qualitatively whether the activation energy for this reaction is relatively high or low. Justify your answer in terms of collision theory.
