Problem

A garage uses a hydraulic jack to lift cars for servicing. The small piston has an area of 2.5 cm22.5\,\text{cm}^2 and the large piston has an area of 300 cm2300\,\text{cm}^2. A car of weight 15 kN15\,\text{kN} is to be raised. (i) Calculate the minimum force that must be applied on the small piston to lift the car. (ii) Determine the mechanical advantage offered by the jack. (iii) A mechanic weighing 700 N700\,\text{N} stands on the small piston. State with reason whether his weight alone is sufficient to lift the car.
