Problem

Two car-rental companies offer the following one-day tariff: • Company A: fixed charge ₹500 plus ₹12 per kilometre travelled. • Company B: fixed charge ₹200 plus ₹15 per kilometre travelled. (i) Taking the distance travelled as xx km and the total charge as yy rupees, frame one linear equation for each company. (ii) Prepare two suitable ordered pairs for each equation and draw both lines on the same graph paper. Clearly label the axes and indicate each line with the company name. (iii) From the graph, find the distance for which both companies charge the same amount. State that distance and the common charge. (iv) Using the graph, decide which company offers the cheaper rate for a 60 km trip and justify your answer with appropriate readings from the graph.
