Problem

Answer the following questions related to parallel connections of resistors. (i) Explain why household electrical appliances are connected in parallel rather than in series. (ii) Two unequal resistors are connected in parallel. Without using a calculator, state which is smaller: the equivalent resistance of the combination or the smaller of the two individual resistances. Justify your answer with a brief mathematical reasoning. (iii) Describe how the brightness of identical bulbs connected in parallel compares with their brightness when the same bulbs are connected in series to the same supply. Give a reason for your answer.
