Problem

A single-phase motor is supplied from a 230 V, 50 Hz mains. During steady operation it draws an rms current of 4.0 A and the phase angle between the supply voltage and the current is 36°. (a) Calculate the average power consumed by the motor. (b) Determine the power factor of the motor. (c) If, after power-factor correction, the current drawn from the mains remains 4.0 A but the motor now consumes 800 W, find the new power factor and the percentage increase in average power compared with part (a).
