Problem

Three point charges are fixed on a straight line along the x–axis as follows: at x=0 mx=0\,\text{m} is placed a charge +q+q, at x=0.30 mx=0.30\,\text{m} a charge +2q+2q, and at x=0.80 mx=0.80\,\text{m} a charge −3q-3q. Answer the following questions without performing any numerical calculation. (i) State Coulomb’s law in vector form, mentioning the meaning of each symbol used. (ii) For each of the three charges individually, indicate whether the net electrostatic force acting on that charge is directed towards the +x+x–direction or the −x-x–direction. Give proper reasoning for every case. (iii) Do any of the three charges experience zero net electrostatic force in the given configuration? Justify your answer logically.
