Problem

A research team wishes to compare the behaviour of protons and deuterons (q=1.6×10−19 C,  md=3.34×10−27 kg)(q=1.6\times10^{-19}\,\text{C},\; m_{\mathrm d}=3.34\times10^{-27}\,\text{kg}) in the same cyclotron. (i) Show that the ratio of the operating frequencies required for protons and deuterons is equal to the ratio of their charge-to-mass values. (ii) For a magnetic field of 1.4 T1.4\,\text{T}, calculate the individual frequencies for protons and deuterons. (iii) Suppose the machine is adjusted to the proton frequency and deuterons are injected instead. After 5050 revolutions, by how many degrees will a deuteron have fallen out of phase with the accelerating voltage?
