Problem

A battery of emf EE and internal resistance rr is connected to an external resistor RR. (i) Obtain an expression for the current in the circuit in terms of EE, RR and rr. (ii) Show that the power delivered to the external resistor is P=E2R(R+r)2P = \frac{E^2 R}{(R + r)^2}. (iii) Using calculus, determine the value of RR for which this power is maximum. (iv) For E=12 VE = 12\,\text{V} and r=1 Ωr = 1\,\Omega, calculate the value of RR that gives maximum power and find the corresponding power.
