Problem

A closed gas tank is connected to an open-ended manometer containing oil of density 800 kg m−3800\,\text{kg\,m}^{-3}. The pressure of the gas in the tank exceeds atmospheric pressure by 1.20×105 Pa1.20\times10^{5}\,\text{Pa}. (a) Derive an expression for the difference in oil levels, hh, required to balance a given pressure difference ΔP\Delta P between the tank and the atmosphere. (b) Calculate the value of hh for the given data. (c) If the oil is replaced by a liquid of density 1000 kg m−31000\,\text{kg\,m}^{-3}, find the new level difference and state how it compares with the value obtained in part (b).
