Problem
A cricket coach claims that, for any ball bowled so that it lands back on the pitch at the same level from which it was released, the time taken to rise to the highest point is exactly the same as the time taken to fall back to the ground.
Answer the following to examine the claim:
(i) State the principle of independent motion for a projectile.
(ii) Explain, without using numerical calculations, why the time of ascent equals the time of descent when the initial and final vertical positions are the same.
(iii) If the same ball were bowled on the surface of the Moon with the same initial speed and direction, describe qualitatively how the ascent time would compare with that on the Earth and give a reason for your answer.
