Problem

A 0.5 kg0.5\,\text{kg} stone is attached to a light, inextensible string 0.8 m0.8\,\text{m} long and is whirled in a vertical circle at uniform speed. (a) Identify the force (or combination of forces) that provides the centripetal force when the stone is at (i) the lowest point, (ii) the highest point of its path. (b) If the speed of the stone at the lowest point is 8 m s−18\,\text{m}\,\text{s}^{-1}, calculate the tension in the string at that instant.
