Problem

A block of mass mm is released from rest at a height hh above the top of an uncompressed vertical spring fixed to the ground. When the block momentarily comes to rest after compressing the spring by xx, its speed is zero even though it has fallen through a distance (h+x)(h+x). Explain briefly why the block’s speed is zero at that instant.
