Problem

A light glass beaker is hung from a spring balance. The balance reads 1.5 N1.5\,\text N when the beaker is empty and 3.0 N3.0\,\text N when the beaker is filled up to the 250 cm3250\,\text{cm}^3 mark with an unknown liquid. Take g=10 m s−2g = 10\,\text{m\,s}^{-2}. (i) Calculate the mass of the empty beaker. (ii) Determine the mass of the liquid added. (iii) Find the density of the liquid in kg m−3\text{kg\,m}^{-3}. (iv) The same volume of water would have a mass of 250 g250\,\text g. State whether the liquid is lighter or heavier than water, giving a reason based on your calculation.
