Problem

To stop a car, a driver first requires a reaction time before braking begins; then the car slows with constant deceleration. The total distance travelled in these two phases is 56.7 m56.7\,\mathrm{m} at an initial speed of 80.5 km h−180.5\,\mathrm{km\,h^{-1}} and 24.4 m24.4\,\mathrm{m} at an initial speed of 48.3 km h−148.3\,\mathrm{km\,h^{-1}}. Find: (1) Your reaction time. (2) The magnitude of the deceleration.
