Problem

A uniform thin rod of mass MM and length LL is pivoted about an axis perpendicular to the rod that passes through a point PP located at a distance xx from the centre of the rod (0<x<L20 < x < \tfrac{L}{2}). (i) Derive an expression for the moment of inertia IPI_P of the rod about the axis through PP in terms of M,LM, L and xx. (ii) Using your result, evaluate IPI_P for x=L3x = \tfrac{L}{3}. (iii) Comment on the limiting values of IPI_P as x→0x \to 0 and as x→L2x \to \tfrac{L}{2}.
