Problem

A glass vessel of volume 1.000 L1.000\,\text{L} at 20∘C20^{\circ}\text{C} is completely filled with air at the same temperature and at atmospheric pressure. The vessel and its contents are then heated to 120∘C120^{\circ}\text{C} while the external pressure remains unchanged. The coefficient of cubical expansion of glass is 9.0×10−6 K−19.0\times10^{-6}\,\text{K}^{-1}; treat air as an ideal gas. (a) Calculate the actual (real) increase in volume of the air due to the temperature rise. (b) Determine the increase in volume of the glass vessel itself. (c) Hence find the volume of air that will overflow from the vessel when the final temperature of 120∘C120^{\circ}\text{C} is reached.
