Problem
A long glass tube carries water steadily from a reservoir. A fine thread of a coloured dye is introduced at the tube entrance so that the dye can be seen inside the flowing water.
(i) Describe qualitatively how the appearance of the dye thread changes as the volume flow rate of water is gradually increased from very small to very large values.
(ii) Explain, with reasons, what the observed changes reveal about the transition from streamline to turbulent flow in the tube.
(iii) Why does the onset of turbulence in this experiment signify a larger rate of mechanical energy loss per unit volume of fluid?
