Problem

In an acoustic experiment the speed of sound in a sample of neon gas at 300 K300\,\text{K} and 1 atm1\,\text{atm} is measured to be 950 m s−1950\,\text{m\,s}^{-1}. The molar mass of neon is 20.2 g mol−120.2\,\text{g\,mol}^{-1}. (i) Determine the value of γ\gamma for neon implied by the measured speed. (ii) Theoretically, an ideal monatomic gas has γ=5/3\gamma=5/3. Compare the experimental value obtained in part (i) with the theoretical value and suggest two factors that might account for any difference. (iii) Using the value of γ\gamma found in part (i), estimate the speed of sound in the same sample when it is heated at constant pressure to 500 K500\,\text{K}.
