Problem

Two point charges +3 μC+3\,\mu\text{C} and +12 μC+12\,\mu\text{C} are fixed 40 cm40\,\text{cm} apart in air on a straight line. A point P lies on the line joining the charges where the electric field is zero. (a) Taking the position of the +3 μC+3\,\mu\text{C} charge as the origin and the line joining the charges as the xx–axis, set up the algebraic equation needed to find the coordinate of P. (b) Solve the equation obtained in part (a) and calculate the distance of P from the +3 μC+3\,\mu\text{C} charge. (c) Determine the electric potential at P, taking the potential at infinity to be zero.
