Problem

Butane undergoes isomerization in the gas phase according to the balanced equation n-C4H10(g)⇌iso-C4H10(g)\text{n-C}_4\text{H}_{10}(g) \rightleftharpoons \text{iso-C}_4\text{H}_{10}(g) At 450 K, the equilibrium constant for the forward reaction (as written above) is Kc=2.4K_c = 2.4. Answer the following questions about this system. (a) Calculate the numerical value of the equilibrium constant for the reverse reaction at the same temperature. Show all work and include appropriate units or unitless justification. (b) A sealed reaction vessel initially contains only 0.100  mol L−10.100\;\text{mol\,L}^{-1} of iso-C4H10\text{iso-C}_4\text{H}_{10}. After the system reaches equilibrium at 450 K, 0.040  mol L−10.040\;\text{mol\,L}^{-1} of n-C4H10\text{n-C}_4\text{H}_{10} is present. Verify quantitatively whether these equilibrium concentrations are consistent with the value of the reverse equilibrium constant you obtained in part (a).
