Problem

A student of mass 50\,kg stands on a frictionless cart of mass 20\,kg that can move along a horizontal track. Initially, both student and cart are at rest with respect to the ground. The student now throws a 0.40\,kg ball horizontally forward with a speed of 12\,m\,s−1^{-1} relative to the ground. Answer the following. (i) Identify the action force and the corresponding reaction force at the instant the ball is thrown. (ii) Assuming no external horizontal forces act on the system, calculate the speed with which the cart (together with the student) begins to move immediately after the ball leaves the student’s hand.
