Problem

Two loops share a common 4 Ω resistor CD. Loop 1 (ACD) has a cell of emf 15 V (positive at A) and a 5 Ω resistor AC in series with CD. Loop 2 (CBD) has an unknown cell of emf E (positive at B) and a 3 Ω resistor BC in series with CD. A current of 1.0 A is observed to flow through the 4 Ω resistor from C to D. Determine the value of the unknown emf E.
