Problem
One mole of nitrogen gas is contained in a friction-less piston at 298 K and 1.00 atm. In a separate apparatus, one mole of liquid water at 25 °C occupies 18.0 mL. The external pressure on each sample is suddenly increased from 1.00 atm to 2.00 atm while the temperature is held constant.
(a) Calculate the new volume of the nitrogen gas after the pressure change. Assume ideal-gas behavior.
(b) Liquid water has an isothermal compressibility coefficient of 4.5×10−5atm−1 at 25 °C. Estimate the new volume of the water sample after the same pressure change.
(c) Determine the percent volume decrease for each sample and compare their compressibilities quantitatively.
(d) Explain, in terms of molecular spacing and intermolecular forces, why the responses of the two samples to the pressure change differ so dramatically.
