Problem
In a laboratory investigation a student measures the acceleration of a wooden block sliding down a rough plane. With the plane set at an angle of 25∘ to the horizontal, the measured acceleration is 1.5ms−2. Assume the acceleration due to gravity to be 9.8ms−2.
(i) Calculate the coefficient of kinetic friction between the wooden block and the plane based on the observed data.
(ii) The same block is now allowed to slide down the same plane after the angle is increased to 40∘. Predict the new acceleration of the block.
(iii) Comment on whether the coefficient of kinetic friction obtained in part (i) would change if the mass of the block were doubled. Give a brief justification.
