Problem

A circular metal loop of area 20 cm² is placed in a uniform magnetic field of 0.50 T. The loop can be rotated about a fixed diameter so that the angle between the field direction and the normal to the plane of the loop can be varied from 0° to 180°. Answer the following questions about this arrangement: (i) Explain qualitatively how the magnetic flux linked with the loop changes as the angle is varied from 0° to 180°. (ii) Identify the orientations for which the flux attains its maximum, minimum and zero values. Give reasons for each answer. (iii) Draw a rough sketch of the magnetic flux (vertical axis) versus the angle between the field and the normal (horizontal axis) for the full 0°–180° range, clearly marking characteristic points.
